Hi,

Checkpoint's product offerings revolves around their VPN-1 product, which is
composed of the Software - which you already have- and the license. Unlike
Netscreen, it is not appliance based. You can choose to install Checkpoint on a
diverse number of platforms - windows (don't!), Linux, Solaris etc and on
dedicated appliances - Nokia IP series, Resilience, SUN, Nortel etc.

Furthermore, Checkpoint breaks down their products (licensing) into three main
categories
1) Enterprise - for licensing of products greater then 500 users, which
Checkpoint refers to as Unlimited.
2) Med-Size Business - for up to 500 users.
3) Home Office/Small Business - just as the name indicates, usually 1-50 users.

Of course you can mix and match the above.

Checkpoint's price list is available online for public use:
http://pricelist.checkpoint.com/sections/main.asp

You will also find a link called Descriptions on the same page, you might find
that useful for your purposes.

The Checkpoint course will NOT teach you about the different products. You need
to have a Checkpoint pre-sales/sales person come in and give you an hour
presentation to start grasping their licensing and products. It is
overwhelming. The course mainly explains Checkpoint's components as in firewall
module, management module - smartcenter and so on.

If you are interested in a guide for appliances that support Checkpoint, use
the following link:
http://pricelist.checkpoint.com/sections/main.asp

Good luck with your Checkpoint product knowledge! It is not easy at all and it
is great if you can get Checkpoint's support with the first few sales until you
get used to it.

Girard Moussa

I've heard that, too.

I'm not. I'm just trying to get a grasp of the portfolio of this company
(because obviously, their products are well received (kind of) in the market.
As I said, until now, my background with commercial firewalls is only
Netscreen. And while their (Netscreen's) product sheet is also growing, you can
still get the differences quite quickly, IMHO.

Well, I can only resell what I understand, can't I ? ;-)

I see that the course "CP-I-NG" also has a section about an overview of
FW1/VPN1 components/modules - can this information really not be had without
paying 1700€ and attending a 2day course that doesn't even seem to cover the
creation of a VPN-connection ?

I do own the Demo-CD that can be ordered, and I've bought a QFE-card for my
Ultra10 to test it out (via ebay, should arive soon) But I'd like to actually
know what I do.

Or is there at least a book that can be recommended (and isn't from
2001) ?

Also, is it just me or is the documentation only downloadable for customers
with a valid license ?

Thanks for your help, nevertheless.

cheers,
Rainer
