hi,

At 00:20 10.09.2004, you wrote:
I'm not. I'm just trying to get a grasp of the portfolio of this company
(because obviously, their products are well received (kind of) in the
market.

in my opinion there are two words with checkpoint:
the technical world:
a really great set of tools and features sometimes in different programs
and sometimes in the same program (binary)
the license worls:
a bundle of technical features that are sold as one product (smart center,
smart center pro etc.). some products are sold alone, others require
something else. even more interesting with licensing is upgrading (not from
one version to another but from one product to another).

but as I'm a technician it's my job not to like licensing :-)

As I said, until now, my background with commercial firewalls is only
Netscreen.
And while their (Netscreen's) product sheet is also growing, you can
still get the differences quite quickly, IMHO.

as Girard wrote the pricelist is a good point to start. as you are from
germany I can offer a link with some german description as well:
http://www.isag.at/gen/cp_ng_neu/p0000000000.php

I see that the course "CP-I-NG" also has a section about an overview of
FW1/VPN1 components/modules - can this information really not be had
without paying 1700? and attending a 2day course that doesn't eveen seem
to cover the creation of a VPN-connection ?

don't waste you money if you only want to know presales infos. if you
really want to learn how to setup fw1 and play with it - don't waste your
money.

I do own the Demo-CD that can be ordered, and I've bought a QFE-card for
my Ultra10 to test it out (via ebay, should arive soon)
But I'd like to actually know what I do.

well, this is not so easy. if you have a demo-CD there is a lot of
documentation (pdf) on it.

Also, is it just me or is the documentation only downloadable for
customers with a valid license ?

doku and new fw1-versions are only available for customers with valid
software subscription.

cheers
reinhard

Thanks for your help, nevertheless.

cheers,
Rainer
