Did you get this issue resolved? I'm running into the same problem on
Windows SmartCenter R55. I get:

FW-1 4.1 Backward Compatibility is installed.
The Windows event logs shows: cpWatchDog: [error] SMS failed to start

Tried manually start sms service (smsstart) locally with no error returned
(in command prompt)
but does not start.

I have opened a ticket with Check Point support, I just thought someone else
had the same problem
and knew how to fix it.

What's the event log say? Is FW-1 4.1 Backward Compatibility installed on
that box? It's currently required for Edge management because the Edge
firmware is part 4.1 and part NG.
