Hm... I always thought the difference was that

1) allows access to backend(internal) systems

2) does not allow any access to internal systems

I remember them explaining this in detail in the O'reilly book "building
firewalls", however my copy is currently nowhere within reach.

My question exactly.  Most everyone who does a FW implements a DMZ.
Perhaps ours haven't been real DMZ's.  I was also wondering what a
service network was.
