Assuming that IPSO's behaviour is typical of BSD, the "free" memory is
different from the available memory.

Much of the memory may be used as cache - in-RAM copies of recently
accessed files and similar data. If a process wants to see the file,
the request can be serviced immediately without a disk seek. If, on the
other hand, a process needs more memory, the cached file information can
be instantly wiped, and the memory allocated to the process.

Per FreeBSD's FAQ:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/misc.html#TOP-FREEM
EM
"free memory is wasted memory"

Hope that helps a bit.

Cheers
Mark
