It depends on how well they have done their marketing research. But you're
probably right and they're expecting us to instantly move over to their empty
forums just like that.
I would like to tell them to go a similar route as VMware did. Their forums are
now more active than ever. This mailing list is however not as active as it
used to be and it's probably high time for finding a better or alternate way of
discussing their products than this mailing list. While cpug is a good
alternative it's not Checkpoint's own forum, and I guess it's in CP's own
interest to "own" the central discussion media of their products.
Another thing that has helped VMware's forums becoming such a great success is
that they have had some of their top engineers answering questions there
(especially in the beginning, making the forums more attractive). Another thing
that VMware did was to hire a guy who had been working with the same forum
software at Oracle (http://forums.oracle.com).
Regarding free stuff, I once upon a time received an OPSEC Leatherman knife for
free. I think that was in '99/2000. Having subscribed to this list for almost
10 years now I feel a bit betrayed if they are just shutting it down just like
that.
