You can in fact do an upgrade_export on the UTM-1 and use that config on
another box running R61, but remember the license on the UTM-1 is NOT a
regular VPN-1 UTM license, so you cannot use the license that came with your
new appliance on that other R61 box.
And on any case, you would be taking your new UTM-1 out of production just
brand new... which I'm sure was not the idea of purchasing it in the first
place.
If you talk about downgrading the UTM-1, I guess is because you have a
SmartCenter running R61 that you would like to use to manage it, so how
about upgrading that SMC to R62. You can still manage any existing R61
gateways with an R62 SMC.

try to do an upgrade_export, copy somewhere the resulting .tgz file, do
a fresh install of R61 on it and then use the upgrade_import command to
import your old configuration if you have any.
as far as I have seen on the CP website, there is no istall media for
the UTM-1, and until next week I won't be able to see how UTM-1 looks
like (then I get to play with one).
