Of course, any specific offenders will probably not get your message until they
return, at which point they won't be using an out of office reply. :-\
While these might not ALL be coming from MS Outlook clients, I know Outlook's
Out Of Office Reply feature is one of the more common offenders in improper
auto response. Since I'm going on vacation soon, I googled up a page for
creating custom out of office responses in Outlook. The instructions deal with
issues specific to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (where they
originated), but they're clear enough that most people should be able to adapt
them to other mailing lists (such as this one). In the hopes that others might
find it useful, here's the link:
http://www2.slac.stanford.edu/comp/messaging/Using/custom-out-of-office.htm
I know this is off-topic, but it's not the first time this has come up. I'm
sure even those who don't comment on it publicly, grumble in private when they
receive dozens of out-of-office responses to their posts.
I'm testing the rule I created today. Essentially, it says, "have server reply
using 'On vacation' except if from 'IP Filter Mailing List' or except if it is
an Out of Office message." If anyone posts here today and receives an "On
vacation" message from me, please let me know.

ATT mailservers
Please take your auto-reply off the list will you???
not that I dont mind hearing from you all but I dont most likely among others
as well dont care if you are on vacation. "Trying to be as polite as possible."
But if I send mail to the list I dont want to receive email back from as many
people that just randomly decide to go on vacation at the same time.
