I startup courier-imap independently of Qmail. I use the startup scripts with chkconfig on Redhat to start up authdaemon and courier-imap.

As far as I know, there is no other way...

Problem is that current (at least 4.1.1 that I'm running) don't accept this,
so I HAD to resort to authdaemond (which needs to be restarted every five - !! -
minutes to usable!):
