Use /var/qmail/bin/qmail-ldaplookup to lookup a $USER.

If it does not work, try
$ ldd /var/qmail/bin/qmail-ldaplookup

Does it find your "libldap-whatsoever.so.0"? If not, then have a look at
"/etc/ld.so.conf" and ldconfig.
