If you use tcprules to set the GREETDELAY environment variable, you
can tell it to skip setting it for (e.g.) 216.86.207.16. For example:
216.86.207.16:allow
:allow,GREETDELAY="10"
It would be interesting to know what SMTP client they're using.
(qmail-remote from qmail 1.03 correctly waits for the SMTP banner
before sending commands, so they've either patched away this behavior
or are using a different MTA for outgoing mail.)
Regards.
