I didn't do this install, so I'm not sure what patches were applied.

Uh-oh. That's not a good sign.

Tell me about it. I'm not even a system administrator, mail or
otherwise. I'm a database guy with some programming experience.
Management doesn't grep that though, they only understand, "Hey, you
work with computers, fix this.".

The qmail-smtp run file looks like this:
[...]
/usr/local/bin/rblsmtpd -rdnsbl.sorbs.net -rsbl.spamhaus.org -rsbl-xbl.spamhaus.org -rcombined.njabl.org -rrelays.ordb.org -rlist.dsbl.org \

Some of the RBLs you're attempting to use don't even exist anymore; that alone
can introduce the delays you're seeing.

I have removed the dead entry and replaced the two spamhaus entries with zen per other suggestions in this thread. This seems to have solved the problem as mail is now going through to krudmart.com

At this point, I'd recommend you read "Life with qmail" several times
start-to-finish, then go over your current installation with a fine-toothed
comb so that you understand what you've got installed, how it's configured,
and how it differs from a standard qmail installation. In the process, you
might fix a few latent problems like the above.

I suspect that may be done one day, when we hire a new admin. Until that date though, I'm sure I'll have to tinker with it a few more times. :(
