Indeed I had clobbered qmail in the way Matt originally suggested. I just didn't understand the ramifications. my qmail-inject was 12 bytes. Once replaced, all is well.

Thanks to all of you for educating me on some basics.  I appreciate it.

do  to  get  qmail to  a  pristine  state?  As  Matt has  indicated,  it
looks  like  you've screwed  up  qmail-inject.  How  big (in  bytes)  is
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject on this system?
