Being mainstream is no assurance of correctness; MS Outlook Express is
probably the most-used MUA on the planet, but it is well documented as being a
buggy, non-standards-compliant piece of crap.  I don't know if the Mac mail
app is as bad, but it wouldn't surprise me.
