I seem to be having a problem with qmail-local taking a lot of CPU quite
often. It doesn't happen with every email, but it doesn't seem to have any
"rhyme or reason" as to why it happens with some. The qmail-local task can
take up to 99% CPU, though when its a problem, it usually takes only 70-80%.
The problem is, this is basically causing some TCP services to not respond
to connection requests, or take too long (over a minute). The users that
have Outlook often receive an error. This is, of course, bad. Any ideas
where to start to analyze this problem?

Yes: you need to provide more information.

-did you apply any patches to qmail? If so, which ones, from where, what
  versions?

-exactly how have you configured qmail? Include the complete, unedited
  output of the `qmail-showctl` command

-when you say qmail-local is consuming a lot of CPU, do you mean:
-a single qmail-local process, or many in aggregate are consuming the CPU?
    Show us the evidence.
-qmail-local itself is consuming the CPU, or a child process run by
qmail-local (i.e. a program called from a .qmail file, etc)? Show us the
    evidence.

-when this happens, what is the load on the server? What are the current
concurrency levels logged by qmai-send at the time? Show us the log
  messages.

*Please* read the document linked below in my .sig for details of some of the
information you should be providing.

Charles,

I apologize.  I've read portions from the link you provided in your signature, and I understand that this list cannot help me.  I'll probably seek commercial support.  Thanks for your time and detailed response!

Thanks again,
Phillip
