Sure you can.  Archive the contents of that folder daily/weekly/monthly, etc.
Use a mail retriever such as getmail to pull mail from it and *delete* it.
There's lots you can do about it.

If you're on Linux, `man strace`.  Otherwise, try `man ktrace`.  If you still
need help, ask your OS vendor.
