I was in the same boat. we tried to lower the timeoutsmtpd as an experiment, actually. Since it seemed to work, i never changed it back :)

I've been running a bunch of machines handling a lot of mail with a 15 second timeoutsmtpd. It's been over a year, and I haven't received complaints of customers losing mail.
