Maybe the errors I'm seeing in qmail are due to qmail getting the same result as me on my first try. What would make these kind of queries only work on the second and subsequent tries ?

What do your dns logs say?
I'm sorry, which dns logs are you referring to ? Where can I find them ?

Run named with -d<debug level>, as in named -d5 <other flags you use> and then look for the named.run debug file.
Hope that helps
My named is not giving me any answers :

[root@yoruban init.d]# ./named
[root@yoruban init.d]# ./named start
[root@yoruban init.d]# ./named stop
[root@yoruban init.d]# ./named status
[root@yoruban init.d]# ./named start

Could this be part of the problem ?
The named service script is there and looks fine, how can it not be answering to those commands ?

Thanks,
