First off I am not a DNS guru but have been asked to setup a TinyDNS server for serving out an internal only domain. I have successfully setup tiny dns once before for a real external domain server. As of now I have TinyDNS installed only (I do not have dnscache running yet). I looked in the docs and searched the mailing list archives but I could not find what I need (most likely as I lack the knowlege to search for the appropriate terms or what we want to do is wrong) This is what I need to do. We have an internal domain call it mydomain.com. It contains 3 machines 1 of which is the DNS server. The DNS server is authoritative for this internal domain. For the sake of the argument the domain is NOT registered anywhere. What we want is for all DNS queries to go to TinyDNS first and then if its not something it can resolve to then go and use the DNS Cache server. Can this be done? The real picture is this. The domain is registered but points to an external ip on the outside firewall. Two machines internally are running software that forces dns resolution (ignoring etc/hosts ) to determine ip addresses. We would rather have the the ips resolve to the internal ip's as we only want to have port 25 open on the firewall for domain so that mail can be delievered. Basically the domain is registered so that mail can be sent to the domain.and no other hosts need to be defined. Internally however due to the nature of the software we need a dns server that resolves ips locally if it can and then goes out through a cache server. thanks in advance for any help Doug -- What profits a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul? |
