So, some more investigation turns up that ``host -t mx ...'' sets the
recursion bit unlike ``dnsq mx ...''. Using dnsqr instead gives:

    $ DNSCACHEIP=$(dnsip ns1.dreamhost.com) dnsqr mx twomuffins.com
    15 twomuffins.com:
    80 bytes, 1+1+0+1 records, response, authoritative, noerror
    query: 15 twomuffins.com
    answer: twomuffins.com 14400 MX 0 odin.dempsky.org
    additional: odin.dempsky.org 14400 A 76.185.92.143

like I expected from dnsq.

At this point I think I need to take this up with dreamhost.com to
figure out why their server's not sending back MX records except for
recursive queries. At this point, I think my issue is off topic for
this list (if it wasn't to begin with), but I'd still appreciate a
simple ``you're on the right track'' or any useful information to
relay to dreamhost.com.

Sorry for the noise.  :-)
